Comprehensive Dental Treatments

General Treatments

For many people, a trip to the dentist is best avoided-normally because of a bad experience, a painful unnecessary treatment or a lack of understanding and care from a previous dentist in the past.

Please don’t be tempted to put off a check-up until you are in pain or dire need of emergency treatment. Regular appointments are much more pleasant- and often there is no need for anything other than a quick look in your mouth!

If you haven’t visited the dentist in a while, you’ll be pleased to hear that a check-up is now a much more pleasant experience. Modern surgeries are comfortable and relaxed with caring staff working hard to fulfil your needs. Nervous patients are listened to and any requests will be accommodated in order to make your visit as pleasant as possible.

At Greenwood Dental Practice, we offer our customers a wide range of general dentistry services (restorative and preventive) to help keep your mouth in top condition. Tooth coloured fillings are standard practice, as is the fitting of cosmetic restorations including veneers, crowns, and bridges.

We specialise in complete smile makeovers including short term orthodontics, teeth whitening and dental implants. Our highly skilled and experience staff can help make your dream smile a reality.

Our hygienists provide a comprehensive (and highly important) service. A scale and polish can make a world of difference to your mouth and will also help to remove any plaque build-up, cutting your chances of developing gum disease significantly.

All our dental check-ups include a mouth cancer assessment as standard in the hope that oral cancers can be picked up earlier-offering the best chances of treatment and survival.

If the thought of a visit makes you nervous, please speak to us, and we’ll do all we can to make your visit a relaxed and pleasant one. We are able to provide intravenous sedation if required-please see our ‘Nervous patients’ page for more information.

We understand that patients continually seek the best service, the highest quality care and an ever wider range of treatments to meet their needs.

Our aim is to build and maintain a positive, long-term relationship with you and your family. Whether you are in need of treatment or advice, we will endeavour to help you maintain a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile-today and in the future.

Root canal treatment (also called Endodontics) is needed when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected through tooth decay or damaged by an injury to your mouth. This infection may spread through the root canal system, which could eventually lead to an abscess, causing a great deal of discomfort. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the tooth may need to be taken out.

Our dentists can perform root canal treatment to stop the infection from spreading and will preserve as much of your teeth as possible. Using specific techniques and advanced equipment, you will receive a local anaesthetic and the treatment overall should feel no different to having an ordinary filling placed. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. A temporary filling is put in, and the tooth is left to settle. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure, and most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits.

To keep your mouth in tip-top shape, we recommend you come in for regular hygiene appointments and dental check-ups.

A fear of the Dentist is a highly common thing – with many of us avoiding a visit until it’s absolutely necessary – usually because we are in considerable pain!

Many feel anxious before a dental check-up, but for many others this fear develops into a phobia, with the mere thought of visiting a dentist causing symptoms including faintness, heart palpitations and shaking.

There is no particular reason for developing a fear of the dentist, and it can happen to anyone at any time. More often than not, it arises as a result of a negative experience in the past-normally in childhood. Anything from a painful or failed treatment, lengthy complications or an unsympathetic dentist who didn’t take the time to fully explain a procedure can all be contributing factors.

When a fear develops into a dental phobia it can be all encompassing- and those people who require immediate treatment due to serious dental problems will often choose to simply live with their issues- and can often be in significant pain as a result.

Let Us Help You Overcome Your Fears

It’s really important to try and deal with the problem before you get to this stage. Don’t live in pain because you are scared. If you can visit the dentist on a regular basis for quick, comfortable check-ups, it’s much more likely you’ll avoid the need for more involved treatments in the future.

Intravenous Sedation

We are pleased to offer intravenous sedation. This highly effective sedation is administered quickly and comfortably with a needle in your hand. It will help you relax and feel calm. You will be able to communicate with your dentist, although most likely won’t be fully aware of what is going on around you!

Please do bear in mind that the effects of intravenous sedation can take several hours to wear off and because of this you will need to bring a friend or family member with you to your appointment so that they can help you get home. You will also need to make sure someone is around to look after you for a few hours after your procedure.

A sinus lift is an oral surgical procedure that extends into the sinus cavity above the jaw and packs bone graft material into this space. This graft material will be incorporated by the surrounding bone and form a solid structure very similar to bone. After a waiting period, the site will be checked and once an adequate bone density level is achieved your implant will be ready to be placed.

One or more missing teeth or uncomfortable and loose fitting dentures can cause a number of personal and practical issues in your day-to-day life.

Not only is the impact on your self-confidence significant, but eating and speaking can become increasingly difficult.

With one or more missing teeth, the health of your mouth can be compromised. Bacteria build up in any gaps can increase your chances of developing gum disease and tooth decay. This can also lead to bad breath.

If you have several missing teeth, those that remain can start to move or rotate-resulting in spacing or misalignment.

Loose dentures which move around in your mouth can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Often wearers will avoid eating certain foods or try not to smile or talk too much as the dentures are very obvious and unattractive.

There is another way.

Dental implants offer a functional, safe and long term solution which could significantly help to improve your quality of life, helping you to feel confident, comfortable and happy once again.

Dental implants are suitable for most people, no matter their age, the condition of their teeth or the number that need to be replaced. The main points to consider before surgery are your overall general health, the condition of your gums and that you have good standards of oral hygiene.

At Greenwood Dental Practice, we specialise in the placement of dental implants and are very pleased to accept referrals from other dental practices. Our highly skilled and professional staff have wide-ranging experience in the area of dental implants, and the general success rate is over 90%.

We always make use of the best quality materials and products to ensure the longevity and comfort of your new implants.

We gain a great deal of job satisfaction when we see a client who has struggled with missing teeth leave the practice with a beautiful, brand-new set of fully functional teeth.

Dental implants really can be life changing for many people. Just imagine being able to smile, eat, talk and feel confident in yourself again. Imagine the improvement in your oral health (today and in the future) and the change in your facial features when support to cheeks, lips, and chin is restored.

Whatever the condition of your teeth or however hopeless you feel your situation is, please speak to us today.

We can offer a range of treatments to help you smile freely and live the life you truly want to.

The Benefits of Dental Implants?

There are a number of benefits to dental implants;

  • Once established, implants are well-fixed, strong and can last for many years.
  • Implants don’t move around-unlike dentures, which can be uncomfortable.
  • Dental implants stop the jawbone from shrinking due to a lack of stimulation.
  • Implants prevent your other teeth from moving.
  • They stop food getting stuck in gaps-reducing your chances of gum disease.
  • Dental implants can help to improve speech and your ability to eat.
  • Implants can be used to replace any number of teeth.
  • Implants don’t affect your remaining teeth in any way.
  • Self-confidence and lifestyle can be significantly improved.

How Does a Dental Implant Work?

Your dental implant will replicate the structure of a natural tooth. It consists of a titanium root which will be placed directly into the bone in your jaw (replacing the natural root) and a manufactured restoration which will be attached to it. An implant can hold a single crown to replace one tooth or a denture or bridge to replace several.

Once it has been placed, the implant will need around 2–4 months to establish. During this time, your bone will grow naturally around the implant, helping it to fuse securely to the jaw. A temporary restoration will be fitted if required, and full dentures can also be worn.

When it is ready your crown, bridge or denture will be fitted. The restoration can be made from various materials including gold and ceramic.

When complete, your implant and restoration will be very strong and hard-wearing. It should feel as secure as your existing teeth and with good care should last just as long!

Things to Consider Before Implant Surgery:

It’s important that you have a good standard of general health, and this will be carefully considered before any dental implant surgery takes place. Specific patient requirements will be considered prior to any treatment, and a long-term plan will be drawn up in advance to include regular after care.

Long-term commitment from the dentist and patient is required for a dental implant to be successful. You will require multiple visits, check-ups and significant recovery time between stages.

You will also need to commit to looking after your teeth and gums now and in the future. The long-term health and suitability of your gums is imperative, as this will hold the implant successfully in place. Any gum disease (previous or existing) will need to be assessed.

Patients with diabetes or who are heavy smokers have a greater risk of developing gum disease and infections following surgery and may not be considered as suitable candidates.

How Are Dental Implants Placed?

Implant placement usually takes place under a local anaesthetic, although a sedative will be considered in some cases where treatment is more complex or lengthy or in very nervous patients.

Insertion of an implant is a minor surgical procedure which could take anywhere between 30–60 minutes. A period of between 2–4 months will be required to allow the gum to recover and the implant to fuse with the jawbone.

No pain should be experienced during the implant procedure, although you may notice a little discomfort in the immediate days or weeks following it. This should be relieved by standard painkillers.

It is important to brush your teeth and gums in order to avoid any discomfort or the development of an infection. If your implants are not kept clean, then plaque will form-resulting in bleeding and soreness.

Overall, dental implants are a safe, long-term option for many people and can boast a success rate of 95%. With regular long-term care and if they are looked after correctly, they can last for 15 years or more.

There is a solution to having straighter teeth without having to wear metal braces. Known as invisible orthodontics, this type of treatment offers you the choice of wearing a clear and sometimes removable appliance while straightening and aligning your teeth.

This is often a favourable option for adults who have professional careers and don’t feel comfortable wearing unsightly ‘train track’ braces for months on end. The technology behind invisible orthodontics is highly advanced and often gives patients a much shorter treatment time, depending on their individual cases.

How Invisalign Works

Benefits of this type of treatment include having teeth straightened in a generally shortened period of time, straighter teeth and alignment of your top and bottom jaws. You can also enjoy the flexibility of your braces being hidden from an untrained eye, making you feel less self-conscious when socialising or speaking in public. With removable devices, you can also take them out to eat or for special occasions, so they fit around your lifestyle.

It is important to remember that straighter teeth are healthier teeth. When your bite is properly aligned and your teeth are straightened, there are fewer gaps and areas for food to get trapped and plaque to build up on the teeth, causing decay. In that sense, invisible orthodontics is a long-term investment in your oral health.

Did you know that recent research by the British Dental Health Foundation and Invisalign shows that one in four people in the UK are unhappy with their teeth?

In fact, up to 70% of us are so unhappy with our teeth that we avoid smiling in photographs all together!

It’s hardly surprising, though-when you consider that a smile is one of our most noticed and remembered features. When we smile at others, we give them an instant (and long-term) impression about ourselves. Likewise, it’s usually what we remember most about someone else.

Today, we are constantly bombarded with photos of gorgeous celebrities showing off their stunning white smiles. For this reason, it’s no wonder many of us can feel self-conscious about our own teeth.

Are your teeth crooked or misaligned, stained and discoloured? Do you have gaps or overcrowding? Would you like to repair broken and chipped teeth or replace any that are missing? The list of improvements can be endless and varied!

Luckily, with the wide range of cosmetic dental treatments available at Greenwood Dental Practice, a healthy looking and attractive smile is now a possibility for everyone. It doesn’t matter about your age or the condition of your existing teeth.

The benefits of a beautiful smile are obvious for all to see, but the changes in self-confidence can also be dramatic. Replacing missing teeth can greatly help to improve your overall oral health-lowering your risks of developing tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath.

However, you are keen to improve your smile, the changes can be subtle or dramatic. For a quick and simple transformation, then tooth whitening is a great way to give your smile a new look.

Likewise, replacing old grey amalgam fillings with tooth coloured composite can dramatically freshen the look of your mouth.

Broken or discoloured teeth can be successfully restored with veneers, whilst crooked, misaligned or gapped teeth can be quickly, comfortably and cost effectively straightened with a variety of braces and aligners. Today, many of these are more discreet than even before- and some are even invisible!

Cosmetic treatments are often more comfortable and convenient than expected. Many are tailored to the individual, allowing them to be planned in advance, giving reduced treatment times and making them more cost-effective.

Whatever you’d like to change about your smile, don’t just assume it isn’t possible. The right treatment really is there for everyone. At Greenwood Dental Practice, we can offer a wide range of cosmetic treatments to help make your dream smile a reality.

Questions & Answers

Why Have My Teeth Discoloured?

This can be for a number of reasons; from smoking to consuming certain food or drinks, or down to age and general wear. We can provide advice to improve your oral hygiene routine and maintain the health of your teeth and gums.

Will Teeth Whitening Be Painful?

Although some patients report increased sensitivity during treatment, this should pass after a short time. We have selected treatments that will hopefully reduce any uncomfortable sensations and leave you with brighter, whiter teeth. We will also protect your gums from irritation when the whitening treatments are applied to the teeth.

How Long Does Teeth-Whitening Treatment Last?

You will need to maintain your new smile with top-up treatments every few months, but these can be carried out at home. As always, we recommend maintaining a positive oral home care routine to keep your teeth and gums as clean and healthy as possible.

How Does It Work?

Enlighten Evolution 3 combines an at-home treatment with a final in-surgery boost.

After taking impressions of your teeth, customised super seal trays will be produced for you at the Enlighten laboratories. These comfortable and discreet trays, which are unique to the Enlighten system, will fit your teeth perfectly.

You will need to wear these trays each night for 2 weeks, followed by a visit to us on the 15th day for a 40-minute booster treatment.

Even though the results are dramatic, you may be surprised to find out that the concentration of bleach used is just 25% of that used in other treatments. This is because the unique super seal trays directly contribute to the success of treatment.

Do the Results Look Natural?

Yes. Even though the shade of your teeth will change dramatically, the results will still look natural. Enlighten is particularly effective for those with tough stains. The system is safe and long-lasting and following treatment, results can be maintained by simply wearing the trays around 6 times a year- or once every couple of months.

For a radiant, beautiful smile that gets healthier with treatment.

There are a number of products available in the Philips Zoom range, depending on the level of staining in your teeth and the final shade you are hoping to achieve. Results can be seen in as little as 60 minutes-although more severe staining may require a few weeks.

We can provide you with in-surgery whitening or supply a home whitening kit if you would prefer a more convenient option.

The Phillips Zoom DayWhite/ NiteWhite home treatment will help to create a shiny, lustrous smile whilst also helping to improve the look and feel of your tooth enamel-helping to improve sensitivity. Following treatment, your teeth won’t just look whiter but will feel healthier and stronger too.

We will supply you with a customised tray and a set of syringes and bleach. As the tray is specially made to fit your teeth, you will find results are consistent-with the same colour change on all teeth.

Use your treatment when and where it suits you. You only need to wear the trays for around 30–60 minutes each day (DayWhite) or overnight (NiteWhite). Don’t worry if you miss a day-this system is great for those who need flexibility due to a busy schedule.

Phillips Power Whitening can be undertaken in surgery. This simple procedure provides significant results in around an hour. It’s ideal for those who are limited on time and would prefer an instant result without the need to take everything home with them!

With a protective coating placed over the teeth and gums, the whitening gel will be applied and activated with a blue light. The process may be repeated several times during your appointment.

Phillips Zoom products have been used worldwide by over 14 million people. This recognised and trusted brand comes highly recommended by Dentists as the most effective way of whitening your teeth in the healthiest way.

Looking After Your Teeth Following Your Phillips Zoom Treatment

Following your Zoom whitening treatment, we will give you professional instruction and tips in order to help you best maintain your new look. There are a number of products available (including touch up kits, whitening pens, and electric toothbrushes) to help you look after your new-look teeth.

Remember to pay close attention to your diet in order to help keep your teeth as white as possible. Red wine, berries, coffee, Coca-Cola, rum and other dark food and drink items can cause staining. Giving up smoking can also significantly help to slow down the discolouration process.

Keep up a good oral health routine-brushing your teeth twice a day.

Are your teeth stained, chipped, or not aligned on top of each other? Veneers are a good treatment option to consider because they look like natural teeth and don’t require a major procedure.

A veneer is a very thin, tooth-coloured piece of porcelain (like a false finger nail) that is bonded on top of your own tooth. Based on your needs, we can adjust the shape of your veneers to make your teeth overall look longer and or closer together. You can have just one veneer or a whole set, known as a smile makeover.

For single stained teeth, we can also match the precise shade of porcelain to give it a lighter appearance and fit in with the surrounding teeth. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when braces are not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.
